When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God. He created them male and female and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind”[a] when they were created.

When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth. After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.

21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. 22 After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years.24 Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.

In Chapter 5 of Genesis we are given the continued line of Adam which would also be the line that would lead to the birth of Jesus Christ.  Everything placed in God’s word is importance and has been put their for a specific reason.

God has an appointed time when people will live and when they will die.  Each of those listed in chapter five had an appointed time in which they would walk upon the earth.  Couple of important take aways are how long the people lived upon the earth before the flood that came during the day of Noah.

Many of them lived almost for one thousand years and we can see that living that long upon the earth would cause the earth to be filled with people.  Even though during these genealogies it pointed to the person who would be born by the person listed.  It is important to realize that wasn’t the only descendant created by that person.

They had other sons and daughters and we see this in Adam alone that after Adam had Seth that he continued to have other sons and daughters.  Another important dynamic this created was that the truth of what happened during the fall of Adam and Eve was passed down from generation to generation.  Because of how long Adam lived he would have the opportunity to share first hand knowledge of what the garden was like and what happened during the fall.

Another important part of this genealogy is the mention of Enoch.  Enoch was the seventh from Adam and his place in this genealogy is not by mistake or chance.  The number seven in the bible stands for fullness or completion.  Enoch faithfully walked with the Lord and we know from Jude 14-16 that Enoch was a preacher of righteousness who spoke for the Lord.  Beside Elijah, Enoch was the only other man in the word of God who never tasted death but was taken home by the Lord.

But through each generation the hand of God guided those who were born on the earth so that one day Jesus Christ would be born.  It is also interesting the most of those listed had children born to them around 100 years old but Noah did not have children until he was 500 years old.  Noah would be God’s man for the hour.  He would be chosen by the Lord simply because he was a faithful man of God who simply was willing to be used by the Lord.  Even though many would call Noah a fool for building the ark, his faithfulness made it possible for the human race to continue and one day for Jesus to be born upon the earth.

Often times in scripture when we see a genealogy listed we will quickly gloss over the names listed.  But in every genealogy listed the Lord demonstrates His faithfulness, grace, and power.  It is by the grace and power of God that the plans and purposes of God are fulfilled upon the earth.  No matter how hard the enemy tries he will never be able to stop or hinder the plans and purposes of the Lord.  May we be diligent students of God’s word and be willing to study the whole council of God’s word.
