Before I formed you in the womb I knew you

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew[a] you,
    before you were born I set you apart;
    I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”  Jeremiah 1:5

These words were originally spoken by the Lord to the prophet Jeremiah.  Jeremiah had a very difficult ministry in which he was rejected by the nation of Israel throughout the course of his life and ministry.  He was chosen and commissioned by the Lord to be a prophet to the nation.  But he lived at a time when Israel as a nation had turned its back on God and His ways.  They desired instead to worship the gods of foreign nations and to embrace the practices that were forbidden by the Lord.

It ultimately led to Judah being removed from the land by the Babylonian empire.  But these words spoken to Jeremiah can hold true for every believer who follows Jesus Christ.  The Lord knows all things.  He knows every heart that will turn to Him and make Him Lord and Savior.  Before we are ever born the Lord has so planned and designed our lives.  The plans and purposes God has for us are not for us alone, but are part of His greater plan for humanity.

Our faithfulness to the Lord will impact the hearts and minds of many.  We will never know the full impact of our lives until we get to Heaven some day.  But while we are on this earth we must continue to press on with Christ as our focus.  Our every desire should simply be done to honor and glorify His name.  Each and every day we have upon this earth is another opportunity to further God’s kingdom.  No matter how much discouragement we may face we must continue to press on toward the high call in Christ Jesus.

Nothing that takes place in our lives is by chance or accident.  God has designed our lives and He will open every door in His due time.  One of the most difficult things to do is to wait patiently upon the Lord and His timing.  His timing and His ways are vastly different than our own and it requires that we hold fast and continue to grow in the character of Christ.  When we are called to wait the Lord is continually growing His character within us.  Everyone of us are significant to God and His kingdom.  Let us be faithful with the gifts and talents that God has given us.

Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.”‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭29:11‬ ‭NASB‬‬

This was original written and prophesied to the nation of Israel through the prophet Jeremiah before they were taken into captivity. There are times when it can be very difficult to trust the Lord. His ways are higher than ours and often times when the Lord is doing a deep work in our lives it can seem like He has abandoned us and forsaken us.

But what God is doing is building our faith and trust in Him. He is continuing to refine and perfect us into the image of Christ. His plans for us are wonderful but it doesn’t mean we won’t go through pain and suffering. Suffering is an essential part of the Christian journey because it is through the suffering that we face that the character of Christ is developed within us.

Let us hold fast to God’s promises for our lives and not focus on our present circumstances. Everything in our lives is designed by the hand of the Lord. This includes our suffering. But the key to overcoming and growth is abiding in Him. He has not called us to walk this journey in our own strength. He has called us to seek Him for wisdom and strength. Let us hold fast and press on toward the high call in Christ Jesus.
