16 For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess. Deuteronomy 30:16
There is a connection between obedience and blessing. If we truly desire the blessing of the Lord upon our lives then we must walk in obedience. Before we come to Christ we are enslaved to the world and its desires. We seek to fulfill the lust of the flesh. But when we come to Christ we are called to repentance. Repentance requires that we turn our back on the world and its desires and we pursue the Lord with our whole heart.
The Lord gave this command to the nation of Israel. Throughout its history, Israel time and again walked in disobedience towards the Lord. They incured the discipline of the Lord. The Lord sent prophet after prophet, but the word of the Lord was ignored time and again until the Israelites were removed from the promise land.
We today who are in Christ are called to obedience. But we are called to walk according to the Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who leads and guides us in all truth. As we seek the Lord daily it is the Holy Spirit who transforms us from the inside out. In following Jesus Christ we are called to make the Lord our priority of our lives. He leads us one step at a time.
Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.
Deuteronomy 7:9 NIV
The Lord is faithful and keeps His covenant of love. There are times in our lives where we may feel or believe that God has forgotten us. We find ourselves in difficult circumstances and we cry out to the Lord time and again, but nothing seems to change. In these moments we may begin to feel bitterness towards the Lord. But we must guard our hearts because this is simply a tactic and scheme of the enemy.
God desires to deepen our walk with Him and continue to mature us. This often requires for the Lord to place us in a season of waiting. It is in the place of waiting that we must press into the Lord and meditate upon His word and His promises for us. The battle truly takes place in our minds and it is in our minds that the enemy tries to fill our thoughts with lies of doubt, fear, and worry. But every thought in our minds that is contradictory to God’s word is simply a lie of Satan.
The greatest thing we can do for ourselves and the greatest investment we can make is to be a diligent student of God’s word. To spend time daily in God’s word seeking His face. As we come to know and understand the depths of God’s word it will guard our hearts and minds from the lies of the enemy.
These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
Deuteronomy 6: 6-7 NIV
The law the Lord gave Israel was to govern them as a nation and was to govern their lives. God was in covenant relationship with Israel and the blessing of the Lord was simply found in walking in obedience. Through these verses the Lord speaks to the people about the importance of teaching the commands of the Lord unto their children.
Every parent is given stewardship of their children for a period of time. There is a day when every child reaches adulthood and that child leaves the home of their parents. Those children ultimately belong to the Lord and it is the responsibility of the parent to teach their children about the commands of the Lord.
Today under the blood of Jesus we live under the New Covenant. We have the whole counsel of God’s word and we today still have the responsibility to teach our children about the Lord and His word. We live in a world and culture that is steeped in the lies of the enemy. Any parent who fails to teach their children about the word of God, leave their children vulnerable to the lies and deception of Satan.
In America one of the greatest godless institutions we have is the public education system. Daily children are ingrained with a humanistic perspective that is based upon demonic lies. To guard the hearts and minds of our children we should not only pray for them, but daily we should be in God’s word together with them.
The seeds that we sow into their lives as children will stay with them throughout their lives on the earth. Train up a child in the ways of the Lord and they will not turn from it. Yes I have seen some of my friends turn for a time who were raised in the Lord, but their is always a day when the Lord begins to soften the heart and call them back to Him.
Let us understand the honor and privilege we have in raising and training children up in the Lord. The word of God is precious and life changing. Let us take time each day to seek the Lord with our children and pray the hand and protection of the Lord over their lives. Praying that God’s will be done and every plan and purpose He has for their lives be released in His due time.
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
Deuteronomy 6:4-5 NIV
The word of God is not complicated. God has made it very clear that we are to love Him with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength. This simply means that He is God and we are not. There are many who simply give God lip service and simply honor Him with their lips. But the Lord sees every heart and knows all things.
We are only able to experience all that God has for us when we truly love Him with our whole heart. It is very easy in the world we live in today to allow things to become idols and take the place God deserves. But as we abide in Him and draw near our hearts and minds are protected from the wiles and schemes of the enemy.
When Jesus Himself was asked what the greatest commandment was He even said it was to love the Lord they God with all thy heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love thy neighbor as thy self. These two things sum up the law and the prophets. It is simple but incredibly complex and deep at the same time. We only come to this place in our relationship with God as we seek Him each day and draw near. He is the vine and we are the branches. It is through Him that life is found. May we grow each day in our relationship with Christ and become the sons and daughters He has called us to be.
