Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our[a] faith. 5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 1 John 5:1-5
We are called to love our brothers and sisters in Christ. How can we truly claim to walk with Christ and not love our fellow brothers and sisters the Lord has laid His life down for. Yes there will be times when our fellow brothers and sisters offend us and may injure us because the body of Christ is made up of broken people. We need to view one another through the eyes of Jesus. As we abide in Him we will simply love as He loves.
We are called to love God and keep His commandments. His word is not a suggestion or a thought. His word has been given to us as directions and instructions for our own lives. As we walk with the Lord each day and walk according to His word we will naturally love our brothers and sisters.
The commandments of God are not burdensome or heavy. The Holy Spirit will empower us to walk in obedience, but we must make the choice to follow Him each day. If we fail to draw near and take part in His word and in the place of prayer we will fail to walk in obedience. But if we abide in Him, His blessing and favor will rest upon our lives.
We are called to overcome. We are not called to be a door mat for the enemy. We are not called to walk in defeat. But the only way we come to know who we are in Christ is by simply drawing near and diligently studying God’s word. As we diligently study God’s word our eyes will be open to the truth in greater ways. It is our faith in Jesus Christ that makes us victorious. The longer we walk with Him the more we come to understand we are nothing without Him.
The world we live in is dark, broken and fallen. It is impossible to overcome the world in our own strength. But Jesus told us in this world we will have trouble, but to fear not that He has overcome the world. When we come to faith in Jesus Christ we have overcome the world. Walking out the victory, freedom, and authority we have in Christ each day is simply a result of abiding in Him daily.
