1 John 4:7-12: Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.         1 John 4:7-12

The greatest outward sign that we are truly a child of God is the love of Christ at work within us.  It is impossible to counterfeit the love of God and the love of God will enable us to love the most difficult people.  Jesus said that we are called to love one another.  We are not only called to love one another we are called to love our enemies.  In God’s word it simply says that God is love.  If we are truly children of God then His love should fill every part of our hearts and our lives.

If we don’t have love then we can’t truly be a child of God.  If we are truly a child of God then God’s love will fill our hearts.  We will view the world around us through the eyes of Jesus.  We will see the brokenness in every person we come into contact with.

God demonstrated His love to us by sending Jesus to die for our sins.  We didn’t deserve salvation, God simply did this because of His love for us.  How much more should we love one another.  How much more should we love those who hate us and persecute us.  We must have the same attitude that Jesus had as He hung upon the cross.  Father forgive them for they know not what they do.

Before we ever loved God, He choose to send Jesus to atone for our sins.  When God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit created humanity they knew the price that would have to be paid for our salvation.  Jesus knew the price He would pay and the suffering He would go through.  But He chose to come to this earth and die in our place because of His love for us.

Because of God’s love for us we should simply love one another.  We have no excuse for not loving one another.  So many times we will focus on the imperfections in others and we will forget the brokenness that exist in our own lives.  But when we understand the depths of what Jesus has done for us we will simply be filled with His love for one another.

Even though we have not seen God, when we love one another the Lord lives with in and His love is made complete within us.  The bottom line is we are called to love one another.  We are called to love the Lord thy God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength and love our neighbor as ourselves.  In all that we do we are called to be driven by the love of Christ.  As we abide in Him each day and walk with Him, His love will naturally fill every area of our lives.  Love is not only expressed in words, it requires action.  If we claim to truly love our brother and sister it should drive the way we live our lives on a daily basis.
