4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 5 They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit[a] of truth and the spirit of falsehood. 1 John 4:4-6
The them John speaks of is the false teachers and false prophets who have tried to infiltrate the church and lead the people of God astray. Every false teacher is deceived by Satan and their driving force is selfishness and the desire to fulfill every self centered desire. But John makes it clear that the one who is in us is greater than the one in the world. At times the darkness of the world can seem overwhelming and scary, but this is why it is so important to keep our eyes and hearts focused upon Jesus.
False teachers speak from the view point of the world and are received by those who are blinded by the world and also embrace the desires of the world. The world and God’s kingdom are contrary to one another. The world is deceived by Satan and his lies. It is built upon the desires of the sinful nature. But God and His kingdom is built upon who He is and has at its focus His righteousness and holiness. To claim to be in Christ but continue to pursue the world and its desire is not biblical Christianity.
Those who are truly followers of Jesus Christ will draw near to God and hear what the Lord is saying. Jesus said that His sheep would hear His voice because He is the good Shepherd. Those whose hearts are committed to falsehood will not hear the Lord nor desire Him nor His kingdom. They may masquerade as believers in Christ, but the fruit of their life will reveal the true condition of their hearts. Let us draw near to Christ each day and simply be led by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will give us discernment in this hour to distinguish between the true and the false.
