19 This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: 20 If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21 Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22 and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him. 23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. 24 The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us. 1 John 3:19-24
Even if our hearts condemn us we know that the Lord holds us in the palm of His hands. Our salvation is not based on feelings or emotions. It is based upon the truth of God’s word. One of Satan’s greatest weapons is deception and lies. He will try to fill our hearts with condemnation to get us to run from God instead of running towards Him. But it is in His presence that true strength is found. It is in His presence that we are supernaturally transformed.
If we keep the Lord’s commands and do what He says we know that we will be given whatever we ask. The reasons this is is because if we are truly walking in obedience then our hearts and minds are set upon Him and His kingdom. We are truly seeking first His kingdom and His righteousness. We know that if we pray according to His will that it is accomplished and this only happens as we walk in obedience and daily pursue the Lord.
The Lord’s command is simply to believe in Jesus and to love our neighbor as the Lord told us. When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was He said to love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love our neighbor as our self. If we are walking in the love of Christ and according to the leading of the Holy Spirit we will walk in obedience to the Lord. The Lord has not made this complicated or difficult. He has simply told us to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.
The one who keeps God’s commands lives in Him. God is very clear in His word about how He feels about obedience. When we come to Christ we become children of God. We are called to reflect the nature of our Father in Heaven. He has called us to walk in holiness and righteousness and this is only possible as we abide in Him. As we walk in deep fellowship with Him we simply reflect who He is.
We know we are born again by the Holy Spirit who lives within us. When we come to Christ we are born again. We are reconciled with the Lord. We once again have a living relationship with God like Adam and Eve did before the fall. It is the Holy Spirit who is our inner witness to our salvation. May we understand all that we have in Christ and all that Jesus has done for us for us to be reconciled unto God.
