20 But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.[d] 21 I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he made to us[e]—eternal life. 1 John 2:20-25
The anointing we have is from the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who leads and guides us into all truth. The apostle John as he writes these words speaks of the importance of abiding in the truth that we received from the beginning. If we abide in the truth we will abide in the Lord and our reward is eternal life.
But there are some who have begun in the truth and have not abided in it. The notion or doctrine of once saved always saved is not biblical. It is our responsibility to abide in the truth and to daily seek the Lord in prayer and the study of God’s word. It is impossible to grow in Christ and be transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit if we are not abiding in the Lord on a daily basis.
John also defines who is considered an antichrist. It is a person who denies that Jesus is Lord and Savior. It is a person who denies the Father and the Son. Again during John’s day false teachers would try to deceitfully find their way into a congregation, claim they were sent from the apostles, and bring false teaching.
Today we have the full counsel of God’s word and those who are deceived in this day and hour are simply those who fail to know God’s word. False teaching and deception fill the earth. As people give their hearts and lives over to false teaching and deception their hearts and lives are filled with the darkness of the enemy. But we who are in Christ are called to be a light in this hour as we abide in Him and grow in Him.
Always remember that our journey with Christ is progressive. We are led one step at a time and we grow one step at a time. As we study God’s word each day and spend time in prayer, it is the Lord who will lead and guide us into all truth. It is truth that sets us free.
