3 And this is how we know [daily, by experience] that we have come to know Him [to understand Him and be more deeply acquainted with Him]: if we habitually keep [focused on His precepts and obey] His commandments (teachings). 4 Whoever says, “I have come to know Him,” but does not habitually keep [focused on His precepts and obey] His commandments (teachings), is a liar, and the truth [of the divine word] is not in him. 5 But whoever habitually keeps His word and obeys His precepts [and treasures His message in its entirety], in him the love of God has truly been perfected [it is completed and has reached maturity]. By this we know [for certain] that we are in Him: 6 whoever says he lives in Christ [that is, whoever says he has accepted Him as God and Savior] ought [as a moral obligation] to walk and conduct himself just as He walked and conducted Himself. 1 John 2:3-6
The way we come to intimately know the Lord is by walking with Him daily and walking in obedience to His commands. God’s word is not a suggestion. God’s word is the playbook for our lives. He has revealed Himself through His word, and those who fail to study His word will fail to know the Lord in a deep intimate way. Following Christ is not a get out of jail free card. Following Jesus Christ is simply about walking with Him daily in deep intimate fellowship.
Those who claim to know Christ but continue in sin is a liar. To know Christ means that you have come to know Him intimately. When we know Christ intimately we understand the price He paid for our salvation and we use our lives to honor Him and His kingdom. Those who claim to follow Christ but continue in sin have failed to come to know Him and must truly question if they are born again. It is impossible to truly be born again and continue to live in sin. Because the conviction of the Holy Spirit will not allow it.
The love of God is truly perfected in our lives when we walk daily in obedience. To walk habitually in obedience means it is simply a part of our every day lives. Following Christ is not about a one time decision. It is a daily commitment to follow Him and honor Him in all things. A life committed to Christ is not about pursuing fun or enjoyment, it is about in all we do that we choose to honor Jesus.
To claim to follow Christ means that we simply walk as Jesus walked. In the gospels we have the life of Jesus. Jesus not only came to give His life for us, He came to show us how to live our lives when we are truly committed to pursuing God and His kingdom. Jesus was simply driven to do the Father’s will in all things. When we truly commit our lives to Christ this will truly become our hearts desire. God has made things very clear in His word. It is our responsibility to rightly study God’s word daily. It will guard and protect our hearts.
