13 Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. 14 That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. 2 Timothy 1:13-14
The pattern of sound words that the apostle Paul is speaking of is sound doctrine. Sound doctrine is key in rightly walking with God. False teachers will always try to weave their way in and distort the truth of God’s word. The reason truth is so important is because it is truth that sets us free.
Satan is the father of lies and every word that proceeds from his mouth is lie and deception. His greatest deceptions are half truths that contain an aspect of truth, but in the end is simply a lie and deception. The only way to discern and recognize a lie and deception is to know the truth of God’s word and diligently study it.
The reason the apostle Paul gave this instruction to Timothy is because of the threat of false teacher who would try to come in and deceive God’s people and cause division and chaos. It says that Satan comes as an angel of light to deceive and those who follow after him do the same.
The good thing is sound doctrine that we are called to keep and can only be kept through the power of the Holy Spirit. As we draw near to the Lord and develop deep intimacy with Him, our hearts and minds will be focused upon Him and His kingdom. Every decisions we make will be made with the focus of advancing God’s kingdom.
Daily we need to always remember that the battles we face do not belong unto us. As we place all things in prayer before the Lord we place the battle in His hands. But the key is drawing near and making prayer the priority of our lives.
