Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, 2 like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, 3 if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord. 1 Peter 2:1-3
The apostle Peter writes to put aside the deeds of the flesh. Malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander are all part of a person’s life before they come to Christ. But when we come to Christ we are called to put these things aside. We are called to walk according to the Holy Spirit and it is the fruit of the Spirit that should grow and fill our lives.
When a child is born it craves the milk that is produced by its mother. We who are in Christ when we come to Christ we should desire and crave the purity of God’s word. Right living is only the result of studying and sitting under right doctrine. When false teachers infiltrate and the word of God is compromised, what you end up with is people living in wrong ways according to the desires of the sinful nature. We are called to draw near and abide in the Lord. If we are truly growing in Christ we should be maturing and being transformed into the image, character, and nature of who Jesus is.
It is the kindness of the Lord that leads us to repentance. When we understand the grace and mercy of God we desire to set aside the deeds of darkness. We cannot claim to follow Christ and still walk in darkness. Darkness has no fellowship with light. People will justify their actions and sinful behavior claiming they are saved by the grace of God and the grace of God covers them. But they distort the grace of God. The grace of God is His unmerited favor upon our lives. But it does not give us a license to live in habitual and rampant sin. We are called to turn from the wickedness of this world and run with all our heart and might toward the Lord.
