Be sober, be alert

“Be sober [well balanced and self-disciplined], be alert and cautious at all times. That enemy of yours, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion [fiercely hungry], seeking someone to devour. But resist him, be firm in your faith [against his attack–rooted, established, immovable], knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being experienced by your brothers and sisters throughout the world. [You do not suffer alone.]”‭‭1 PETER‬ ‭5:8-9‬ ‭AMP‬‬

For us to be victorious over the devil and His schemes requires that we be grounded and rooted in our faith. The problem for many is they have a very shallow relationship with Jesus Christ and their roots do not go down very deep.

When the enemy comes and attacks, instead of standing their ground they run and hide desiring to be comfortable. An essential aspect of the Christian journey is suffering. It is in the place of suffering that Christian character is built.

But as we abide in Him and grow in Him our roots go down deeper and deeper so that when the test and trials come we stand firm like a strong oak tree in the midst of a hurricane.

Abiding simply means spending time with the Lord and walking with Him in all things. This is cultivated and established as we become disciplined in the place of prayer and the study of God’s word.

If we desire to be a vessel for the Lord glory and a bright light in this dark hour we must be rooted and grounded in Him. This doesn’t happen by following Jesus half heartedly. It happens by abandoning ourselves and our lives to Jesus Christ.
