How to tell the difference between a true shepherd and a savage wolf

28 Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God,[a] which he bought with his own blood.[b] 29 I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. 30 Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. 31 So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.  Acts 20:28-31

15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.  Matthew 7:15-20

Today we have pulpits and churches that are either filled with true shepherds or are filled with savage wolves.  There are those today who subtly distort the gospel and use the gospel for financial gain.  There are those who use the gospel to make a name for themselves and build their own personal kingdom.  The reason many today are deceived by the savage wolves in our midst is because of their ignorance of God’s word and there lack of intimacy with the Holy Spirit.

We have many savage wolves who have made the focus themselves and have taught people not to examine the truth of God’s word, but to instead hang on their every word as if it is gospel.  This sets the stage for people being easily deceived.  People easily giving what little money they have to make those who claim to represent Christ rich and they easily take advantage of so many.

The easiest way to determine if someone is a true shepherd or a savage wolf is to examine the fruit of their lives.  Do their lives represent and reflect the character of Christ?  Is there marriage and their family one that honors and glorifies God?  Do they live an extravagant life style and seem to be more of a superstar than a servant?

Just because someone claims to be a pastor or a messenger for the Lord means very little.  We must be diligent students of God’s word and examine everything that is said against the truth of God’s word.  If we develop deep intimacy with the Holy Spirit and are a diligent student of God’s word we will not be deceived.  But many savage wolves have gone out to deceive and the sad fact is that many well meaning people fall prey to the lies that proceed from their mouths.

What you end up with if you sit under a ministry that distorts the truth of God’s word is you claim to be free in Christ but continue to live in bondage.  There are some ministries that never challenge people with the truth and what you end up with is fat lazy Christians spiritually who have no desire to grow and simply live in comfort.  We must wake up and assess our hearts and our lives.  You may attend a church or ministry because you love the people there, but that is the wrong reason to do so.

Where ever we have committed ourselves to a local fellowship should be one that teaches the truth of God’s word and is open to the moving and leading of the Holy Spirit.  God is raising up true shepherds in this hour but we must be diligent to be true disciples of Jesus Christ.  The enemy will always distort the truth and will send forth his messengers as angels of light who are actually messengers of deception and lies.  Let us have eyes to see and ears to hear.  Let us flee the perversity of this generation and prepare our hearts for our coming King Lord Jesus.
