“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come.”

Out from the throne come flashes of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder. And there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God; and before the throne there was something like a sea of glass, like crystal; and in the [c]center and around the throne, four living creatures full of eyes in front and behind. The first creature was like a lion, and the second creature like a calf, and the third creature had a face like that of a man, and the fourth creature was like a flying eagle. And the four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within; and day and night [d]they do not cease to say,

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who [e]is to come.”

And when the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, to Him who lives forever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders will fall down before Him who sits on the throne, and will worship Him who lives forever and ever, and will cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

11 “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they [f]existed, and were created.”       Revelation 4:5-11

As John experiences the throne room of God in His vision He experiences the awesomeness of who God is.  The flashes of lighting and peals of thunder demonstrate the awesome power of Almighty God.  Many times we lose sight of how powerful God is and it is important that we find ourselves in His presence on a daily basis.  Before the throne of God the Father you have the Holy Spirit who is referred to as the seven Spirits of God.  Seven in God’s kingdom and word represent completeness and wholeness.  The Holy Spirit is the third person of the trinity and works perfectly with God the Father to accomplish the purposes of His kingdom upon the earth.

Before God’s throne is a sea of glass and this speaks about the purity and holiness of who God is.  The only way we are able to draw near unto God the Father is because of the blood of Jesus.  Our good works are but rags before the Lord and for anyone to truly believe their good works will earn God’s favor or His grace is truly deceived.  The four living creatures who have eyes all around point to God’s Omniscience in that He knows all things and sees all things.  Nothing is hidden from His sight.  In all that He has created He has done so to reflect His glory and reveal who He truly is.

The four living creatures represent the character of who Christ truly is.  The lion represents His royalty, authority, and kingship.  The calf represent Christ as a never ceasing servant.  He sits at the right hand of the Father continually interceding for us.  The face of a man represents the fact that Christ is fully man and fully God.  When He came to the earth He emptied Himself of His heavenly glory and fully became man to be the perfect sacrifice to take the punishment that we truly deserved.  The eagle represents Christ as fully God in that He sees all things and nothing escapes His sight.  He holds all things in His hands and in everything that has been created is done with specific design and purpose.

The four living creatures do not cease to worship the Lord day and night.  We have an incredible privilege on this earth to worship the Lord and this doesn’t only take place on Sunday morning.  The way we live our lives is to be a living sacrifice before the Lord.  If we simply give God lip service without action to back it up it is simply meaningless and empty.  When we understand the depth of Jesus sacrifice for us we will desire to honor and please Him in all things.

John is experiencing an awesome event as he stands in the throne room and gets to see and experience the majesty and glory of the Lord.  As the four living creatures worship and magnify the Lord the twenty four elders lay down their crowns before Him.  Everything we accomplish for the Lord upon the earth is simply because of the grace and mercy of Almighty God.  When we stand before the Lord someday we shall cast our crowns before Him because of how awesome and glorious He is.  He simply accomplishes His purposes through our lives.

Everything exist and was created simply because of who God is.  This and this alone is why He alone receives all the glory.  If we desire to walk in humility all our days we simply need to draw near on a daily basis and spend time in His presence.  The more we spend time with Him the more we simply hunger for His presence.  It is in His presence that we truly come to understand how insignificant we are and without Him we can do nothing.  May we decrease that He may increase within us and use our lives for His glory and His kingdom.
