He who overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments

“To the angel of the church in Sardis write:

He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars, says this: ‘I know your deeds, that you have a name that you are alive, [a]but you are dead. Wake up, and strengthen the things that remain, which were about to die; for I have not found your deeds completed in the sight of My God. So remember [b]what you have received and heard; and keep it, and repent. Therefore if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come to you. But you have a few [c]people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments; and they will walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. He who overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’  Revelation 3:1-6

The issue facing the church in Sardis was that they had become spiritual dead.  They were once alive but know the Lord is calling them to awaken from their sleep and their slumber.  How many churches in America today who were once hot with the work of the Holy Spirit have become spiritual dead because they have become filled with the wisdom and the ways of man.

One of the greatest ways a church becomes spiritual dead is they cease to seek the Lord in the place of prayer.  It is very easy to become complacent in our walk with the Lord if we are not daily checking our hearts.  We can become comfortable and enjoy that place of comfort.  But if our desire is to accomplish the purposes of God’s kingdom then we must seek Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

The Lord was calling them to repent of this wickedness and He encouraged those who remained faithful to the Lord.  No matter where the Lord has planted us our churches will be filled with all types of people who are at different places in their walk and journey with the Lord.  We should intercede one for another that our hearts would stay hot for the Lord and filled with the fire of His love.

Jesus makes the statement that He will not erase those from the book of life who have remained faithful unto Him.  This should be a strong warning to anyone who holds to the doctrine of once saved always saved.  There have been some who have begun with Christ but who have abandoned the faith.  When Jesus told the parables of the four soils, three of them were not able to produce a harvest.

The first soil had seed eaten by the birds and the gospel was not received, the second soil was shallow and the seed took no root, the third soil had something grow but was choked by the cares and worries of the world.  We must abide in the Lord daily and walk with Him in daily fellowship.

As we abide in Him we shall grow in Him.  We will be transformed into His image.  The fruit of the Holy Spirit will be produced in our lives.  One of the greatest honors we can have is Jesus confessing our name before the Father.  Let us hold fast and diligently study God’s word.  He is preparing His bride for His return.  May we press on toward the high call in Christ Jesus.
