12 “And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write:
The One who has the sharp two-edged sword says this:
13 ‘I know where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is; and you hold fast My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days of Antipas, My witness, My faithful one, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. 14 But I have a few things against you, because you have there some who hold the teaching of Balaam, who kept teaching Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols and to commit acts of immorality. 15 So you also have some who in the same way hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans. 16 Therefore repent; or else I am coming to you quickly, and I will make war against them with the sword of My mouth. 17 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, to him I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it.’ Revelation 2:12-17
The issue facing the believers in Pergamum is that some of them were eating food sacrificed to idols and were involved in acts of immorality. The Lord is very clear in scripture that we are not to eat food sacrificed to idols and we are called to be holy as He is holy. The temptation of sexual behavior and activity outside the standards that God has established in His word is something the body of Christ has dealt with throughout the church age.
God created sex within the context of marriage between a man and a woman. God has made it very clear from His word what is acceptable and what is not. Even today in the culture we live in many freely sleep with who they want, when they want. They have no regard for God and His ways and desire to redefine what marriage means. This is a ridiculous and arrogant thing because God has defined marriage clearly in His word and for man to claim to redefine it is simply foolish.
The world can have what ever standards they desire. But God has made it clear in His word how we as followers of Jesus Christ are to live our lives. We are called to follow the leading and guidance of the Holy Spirit and it is the Holy Spirit who will lead and guide us into all truth. Sex is a wonderful thing when it takes place in the confines of marriage as God defines in His word.
Balaam in the Old Testament was the prophet who was paid to curse Israel by Balak but was unable to do so because God did not allow him to speak a curse over the nation of Israel. But instead he used the Moabite women to seduce the men of Israel causing them to fall into out right rebellion and sin.
No church is perfect and all churches have their own issues they are dealing with. But the Lord is calling His people to true repentance and to flee the lust and desires of this world. There is a great reward for those who faithfully walk with the Lord till the end of their lives. This is only possible as we abide in Him and draw near in prayer and the study of God’s word. The Holy Spirit will strengthen us for all things.
