Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last

33 They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” 34 But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.

35 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”

36 He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them,37 “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”  Mark 9:33-37

Greatness in God’s kingdom is not about titles or building the biggest ministry to our name.  Greatness in God’s kingdom is simply being the greatest servant.  Our flesh will always desire to have our name become well known.  Many have fallen into this trap of the enemy that it seems they are more concerned with the size of their ministry or how the building looks, instead of being more concerned with being the greatest servant and truly discipling people.

The disciples that follow Jesus were simple ordinary men.  They were empowered by the Holy Spirit and transformed by the grace of God.  Sometimes we want to elevate the original disciples and see them as superheroes when in fact they were simple ordinary people.  They simply fell in love with Jesus and walked in obedience to the Holy Spirit.

Jesus used a small child to truly get his point across.  Children are very simple and very humble.  They don’t question things like adults and their position is very low.  As Christians our desire should not be position and title, but to be the greatest servants we can be.  As we walk with the Lord on a daily basis we are transformed into His image and our hearts and minds become one with His.  He is the greatest servant that He laid aside His glory and choose the cross, the crown of thorns, and the humiliation of everything that came with Calvary.  Let us simply desire to be like Christ in all things.
