For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
The birth of Jesus was prophesied long before He was ever born. When Isaiah gave this prophecy I am sure he wondered how it would be fulfilled. Throughout the Old Testament period the nation of Israel continually looked for its coming Messiah. They were certain that the Messiah that would come would be a conquering king like king David especially since the Messiah would be born of the line of David.
What they didn’t understand is that when Jesus first came, He came to conquer sin and death. The people thought the Messiah would come and over throw the Roman empire. But what they failed to understand is that the greater bondage they lived under was the bondage of sin.
Jesus not only came to save us from the curse of sin and death, He came to save us from the wicked task master that sin and temptation are. As believers and followers of Jesus Christ we are called to walk according to the Spirit. If we are truly walking according to the Spirit and we are filled with the Spirit we will not gratify the lust of the flesh. We will not live in habitual sin.
Many fail to understand all they have in Christ because they simply fail to study God’s word diligently. They carry the title of Christian and attend church on Sunday mornings, but they fail to walk in the power of the Holy Spirit on a daily basis. They simply fail to abide in Him.
Following Jesus Christ is not a one time decision. It is not a get out of jail free card. The purpose of God’s grace and the power of the Holy Spirit is that we would simply walk in victory and authority. The glory of God is manifested on the earth when His sons and daughters reflect His character and nature in their very lives. The Christian journey is one of transformation. If our lives are not being transformed into the image of Christ we need to stop and truly ask why. Are we trying to walk this journey in our own strength, or are we simply failing to abide in Him on a daily basis.
Abiding in Him requires discipline on our part. It requires that we seek after Him more than the air we breath and the food we eat. It is amazing in America how we will move heaven and earth to get something for our stomachs, but we will treat our relationship with Christ like a simple passing hobby. May we be the sons and daughters He has called us to be.
Heavenly Father today I ask you to lead and guide me into the depths of your heart. May my heart and mind be one with yours. May I have eyes to see and ears to hear. May I truly understand all that I have through the finished work of Calvary. May you simply have your way in my heart and life. May your will be done in the mighty name of Jesus!
