Love your neighbor as yourself

18 You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.  Leviticus 19:18

When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was He responded by saying that it is to love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love thy neighbor as thy self.  As followers of Jesus Christ the defining characteristic of our lives is to be the love of Christ at work in our lives.  The only way we grow in the love of Christ is by simply spending time with Jesus on a daily basis.

We have the opportunity each day to get alone with the Lord and draw near to Him.  So many simply allow the empty things of life to distract them from drawing near to the Lord.  What is very sad is that many will not draw near to the Lord until they are in a time of crisis.  Once the crisis has passed, they once again forget the Lord and go about their lives.

What God desires more than anything with us is fellowship and intimacy.  The reason Jesus came is to restore all that was lost in the garden of Eden.  When Adam and Eve sinned they were separated from God and removed from the garden of Eden.  The intimacy that once existed in the garden was now gone.  But Jesus came to restore that which was lost.

When Jesus was crucified and died upon the cross the curtain that stood between the people and the holy of holies was torn in two.  This took place to demonstrate to humanity that access and intimacy with God was once again possible because the issue of sin had been dealt with through the blood of Jesus.  Anyone who places their faith and trust in Jesus are declared righteous before God and are able to go with confidence before the Lord.

The key to the Christian journey is simply drawing near to Jesus each day in prayer and the study of God’s word.  This is not complicated but the reason so many struggle and fail is because they only draw near to God when they are in crisis.  If we will simply draw near to the Lord on a daily basis, then we will be prepared for any storm we will face in life.  If the love of God is going to fill every part of our life it will require that we walk very closely with Jesus on a daily basis.
