Romans 2:25-29: For circumcision is indeed profitable if you keep the law

25 For circumcision is indeed profitable if you keep the law; but if you are a breaker of the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. 26 Therefore, if an uncircumcised man keeps the righteous requirements of the law, will not his uncircumcision be counted as circumcision? 27 And will not the physically uncircumcised, if he fulfills the law, judge you who, even with your written code and circumcision, are a transgressor of the law? 28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; 29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God. Romans 2:25-29
The Jewish believers of Paul’s day took great pride in circumcision. This goes back to the covenant established between Abraham and the Lord. Circumcision is what set the nation of Israel apart from the gentile nations. The false teachers of Paul’s day were teaching and preaching that for gentile believers to be truly righteous that they needed to be circumcised and follow the requirements of the law.
But the great thing about Christianity is that our righteousness before the Lord is not based upon behavior and it is not based upon following and keeping the demands of the law. Righteousness is based solely on our faith in Jesus Christ. When we place our faith in Jesus Christ we are declared righteous.
Now as we follow the leading of the Holy Spirit each day we will walk in obedience to God’s ways because it is the Holy Spirit who will lead and guide us into all truth. But it will not be done in our own power or our own strength. Everything we do for God’s kingdom is by His power and His grace.
The apostle Paul was reminding the believers in Rome that keeping the law meant nothing under the new covenant. Jesus fulfilled the requirements of the law so that we who serve and follow Him today are not only set free from the bondage of sin, we are set free from the requirements of the law.
