1 John 3:16-17: By this we know love

16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?   1 John 3:16-17

True love requires action.  God demonstrated His love for us for laying down His life for us.  Jesus simply doesn’t tell us that He loves us, He demonstrated how much He loves us by choosing the nails, choosing the crown of thorns, and choosing the cross.  Jesus demonstrated His love for us by laying down His life.

We are called to do the same.  We are called to love others with the same love that Jesus has for us.  When we see a brother or sister in need in the Lord we are called to meet that need if we have what they need available to us.  How can we truly claim to love one another if we see one another in need and we neglect that need.  Words that are not based in action are simply meaningless words.  To tell someone you love them but fail to act when we are able to act is simply speaking forth a lie.

As the body of Christ we are simply called to reflect the love of Jesus in all things.  In God’s word it simply says that God is love.  If there is one word to describe who Jesus is that word is love.  If we are truly to be followers of Jesus Christ then we must be driven by His love and do all things in love.  When love is the driving factor in our lives we will be free from pride and we will be free from contention.  When we simply love one another the way Jesus loves us, we will be the bride that God has called us to be.
