4 Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. 5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin. 6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him. 1 John 3:4-6
The focus of this passage of scripture is John’s focus on abiding in the Lord. It is impossible to abide in Jesus on a daily basis and continue in habitual sin. The main reason is that if we are abiding in the Lord it is the Holy Spirit who is directing our lives. He is transforming us and changing us on a daily basis into the image of Christ. He is strengthening us for the journey that is ahead.
When we come to Christ we are declared righteous but the Lord is not asking us to be perfect. We are still human and because of that we are broken and imperfect. We are strengthened by the Lord but there are still times when we will make mistakes. God is not condemning us for mistakes made in our lives, but He desires that we learn from them and simply move forward.
But at the end of the day the key in our relationship with Jesus is abiding in Him. We are called to abide and fellowship with Him on a daily basis. We cannot allow things that do not have any eternal value to take the place that He deserves. Let us simply go to Him with our whole heart and lay our lives before Him. We will be transformed into vessels of His glory and His love.
