2 Watch out for those dogs, those people who do evil, those mutilators who say you must be circumcised to be saved. 3 For we who worship by the Spirit of God[b] are the ones who are truly circumcised. We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. We put no confidence in human effort, 4 though I could have confidence in my own effort if anyone could. Indeed, if others have reason for confidence in their own efforts, I have even more! Philippians 3:2-4.
When the apostle Paul wrote this letter, he was writing to the church that met in the city of Phillipi. The issue they were facing were false teachers who had come in and taught that for gentile believers to draw near to Jesus and be in right standing with God that they need to follow the demands of the law. But if this was the truth then the death of Jesus Christ was worthless because Jesus came not to destroy the law but to fulfill it and everyone who placed their faith in Jesus Christ would not only be set from the curse of sin and death, but would be set free from the demands of the law.
Once our faith is placed in Jesus Christ we are simply called to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. We receive the Holy Spirit when we place our faith and trust in Jesus Christ and as we draw near to the Lord it is the Holy Spirit who fills us and leads and guides us. He leads us on a daily basis so that as we are faced with decisions on a daily basis, it is the Holy Spirit who will give us wisdom in all things.
It is not because of our human effort that we are able to draw near to Jesus. Man made religion is based on human effort, but Christianity is based upon the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus has paid it all and this is why He cried out it is finished upon the cross. He alone has made the way to the Father and all who would place their faith and trust in Him are simply able to draw near.
