14 “And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans[f] write,
‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: 15 “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot,[g] I will vomit you out of My mouth. 17 Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked— 18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. 21 To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.
22 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”’” Revelation 3:14-22.
The message to the church of Laodicea was a message that was filled by rebuke by the Lord. The Lord says that He wishes they would be either cold or hot, but instead they are lukewarm. Water that is both cold and hot has beneficial properties, but water that is lukewarm is good for very little.
The Lord makes it very clear how He feels about lukewarm Christianity. He states clearly that He will vomit them out of His mouth. Their lukewarmness has made Him sick to His stomach. Not only that they believe they are rich because they are wealthy. But the Lord tells them how miserable and poor they actually are. They may have worldly wealth, but they fail to be rich in the things that truly matter in God’s kingdom.
There are so many churches in America that fit this profile. So many churches believe that the effectiveness of their ministry is based upon how beautiful their church looks, how big the building is, how many programs there are, or how popular the message they preach is. But they fail grasp the deep things of God’s kingdom. They fail to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit or allow the Holy Spirit to have His way.
We as a people need to awaken from our slumber and understand the day and hour in which we live. The return of the Lord is very soon for His bride. He is calling His people to prepare their hearts for His return by seeking first His kingdom and His righteousness. We need to have ears to heart and eyes to see in this hour.
