1 Peter 1:15-16: Be holy

but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”

1 Peter 1:15-16 NKJV

We are called to be holy simply because the Lord is holy.  There is a difference between holiness and righteousness.  Righteousness is a gift we receive at the moment we place our faith in Jesus Christ.  Holiness is something we grow into as we grow in the image of Christ.

Sanctification is simply the process of being transformed into the image of Christ.  We are only changed and transformed as we abide in the Lord on a daily basis.  We are transformed as our minds are renewed by the word of God.  We must draw near daily to be transformed into the image of Christ.

Holiness is not something that we will grow into in our own strength.  If we claim to follow Christ but fail to draw near on a daily basis we will not be transformed.  The only way a life is transformed is through the power of the Holy Spirit alone.  This is why Jesus had to leave and return to the Father so that we as believers could receive the promise of the Father which is the Holy Spirit filling our lives and directing our lives.  If we will simply draw near we will be transformed and changed for the glory of God.
